Open lecture by Anastasiya Fiadotava on fake news, October 31th, 2019
Anastasiya Fiadotava, a PhD student at the Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore, University of Tartu, will deliver an open lecture titled "Fake news in folklore studies" on Thursday, October 31th, at 10.15 Ülikooli 16-215.
Everybody is welcome!
The lecture will focus on the concept and definition(s) of fake news. We will try to categorize this phenomenon and illustrate different categories with appropriate examples. Neighbouring terms such as alternative facts, misinformation etc. will also be considered; and fake news will be placed at the broader perspective of media literacy. As fake news are intrinsically connected with some of the popular folklore genres (ie urban legends) and notions widely discussed in folklore studies (ie fakelore), we will examine how the methodological toolkit of folkloristics can be applied to the study of fake news.
